Overview

Anthropology studies humans from evolution to the present day. It thrives on curiosity and seeks to answer the questions we鈥檝e always wondered, like:

  • Where do we come from?
  • What does it mean to be human?
  • Why do people act the way they do?
  • Why are things the way they are?

The journey to these answers is fascinating and Anthropology at Illinois State tackles these big questions head-on.

As a student in our program, you鈥檒l dive deep into cultures, language, and artifacts from the ancient past. You鈥檒l see firsthand how anthropology has major impacts on issues we face today, like poverty, health, and social justice.

Your learning doesn鈥檛 stop in the classroom. Our program cares deeply about civic engagement. You鈥檒l join other students who share your passion for helping others and apply your knowledge to real-world projects that make a positive difference.

The Anthropology field is diverse and offers you the opportunity to pursue your own curiosity. At Illinois State, we鈥檒l give you a basic foundation in all the interesting aspects of Anthropology. From there, you can choose to focus on whatever interests you most.

  • Archaeology studies humans through remains and artifacts left behind centuries ago.
  • Anthropological linguistics is all about language and how it shapes culture and social structure.
  • Cultural anthropology looks at the diverse human cultures of the past and present, including beliefs and social norms.
  • Biological anthropology focuses on the evolution of humans and seeks to understand human diversity.

Whatever focus you choose, our program prepares you for any career. You鈥檒l leave our program with the skills employers seek, such as writing, analysis, communication, and problem-solving. Most of our students do not become Anthropologists. Instead, they鈥檙e applying their skills in fields like business, teaching, film, and non-profits.
