Overview

A healthy environment is essential to our everyday lives. What we eat and drink, the air we breathe, and the places we live and work need to be safe and healthy.

Environmental health and sustainability professionals ensure our communities and environments are safe and healthy. Biological, chemical, and physical hazards pose challenges to our planet and to people. You can study these hazards and help prevent or reduce damage to the environment and human health.

From where you work to what you do, you can have a career in environmental health and sustainability that fits your passion. At Illinois State, you can focus on environmental protection, environmental public health, and occupational health. This can lead you to an exciting career in:

The environmental health and sustainability program is one of only 23 accredited programs in the nation and the only program in Illinois.

Why study Environmental Health and Sustainability?

Environmental Health and Sustainability at Illinois State gives you the skills and experience needed for a successful, in-demand career.

When it comes to your studies, you鈥檒l get plenty of variety and engagement. Many of the classes involve labs and field-based learning.聽 You can also take your learning out of the classroom and research alongside faculty. This lets you explore your interests and find solutions to environmental challenges.

Our internship experience will put you in a professional setting. Your work as an intern will mirror the work you'll do after graduation. It's a great way to put what you've learned into practice.

Our Environmental Health and Sustainability major is the only accredited program in Illinois. This means you can immediately take the following certifications after graduation:

  • State of Illinois Licensed Environmental Health Practitioner (LEHP) examination
  • National Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) examination, administered by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA)
