Overview

Sports Communication is the study of sport through the lens of content creation and strategic communication by and about sports organizations (professional, college, amateur, and youth). Students discover the many strategies of how to effectively communicate in and with different sports organizations in a business-to-business environment, create sports related content, and uncover how sports impact our understanding of gender, race, class, sexuality, nationalism and other socioeconomic factors. Students receive a broad grounding in the communication discipline because sports impact can be seen at the mass, organizational, group, and interpersonal level.

Point of Pride

The School of Communication has an active alumni network in organizations such as the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, NCAA, IHSA and more, who can provide opportunities for networking, mentorship, and internships to enhance the student experience. In addition, there are multiple media outlets in which to gain experience.

Why study Sports Communication?

A sports communication degree can lead to job opportunities in many different fields and sports organizations. Skills and experiences gained through co-curricular activities, internships, part-time jobs, and volunteering are the most important ways to prepare for a sports communication career, and Bloomington-Normal, ISU, and the School of Communication have robust opportunities. Our students at ISU benefit greatly from getting hands on experience with campus and NCAA sports programs that may not be available from day one at larger schools and programs.
